Job Description: Visual Materials Archivist
Position Overview:
The Visual Materials Archivist is responsible for overseeing the management, organization, preservation, and access to visual materials within the library and information science domain. This role requires a deep understanding of archiving principles and practices specifically related to visual materials, including photographs, slides, films, videos, and other visual formats. The Visual Materials Archivist is expected to possess exceptional attention to detail, critical thinking skills, and a strong commitment to preserving and providing access to visual collections.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Develop and implement strategies for the acquisition, appraisal, arrangement, description, and preservation of visual materials in accordance with archival best practices.
2. Conduct thorough assessments of visual collections, identifying conservation and preservation needs, and implementing appropriate actions to ensure long-term accessibility and usability.
3. Oversee the creation and maintenance of accurate metadata and descriptive records for visual materials, utilizing standardized cataloging systems and ensuring compliance with relevant archival standards.
4. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to establish policies and procedures for the arrangement and description of visual materials, ensuring consistency and efficient retrieval.
5. Provide reference and research assistance to library patrons, researchers, and staff members seeking access to visual materials, assisting with locating, retrieving, and interpreting relevant items.
6. Develop and deliver training programs and workshops related to visual materials management and preservation, aimed at increasing awareness and understanding among library staff and external stakeholders.
7. Stay abreast of emerging trends, technologies, and best practices within the field of visual materials archiving, and actively contribute to professional development activities.
Qualifications:
1. Master's degree in Library and Information Science with a specialization in Archiving, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Proven experience working specifically with visual materials, including photographs, slides, films, videos, and other visual formats, within an archival setting.
3. In-depth knowledge of archival principles, practices, and standards related to visual materials, including appraisal, arrangement, description, and preservation.
4. Familiarity with metadata standards and cataloging systems commonly used in visual materials archiving, such as Dublin Core, MODS, or METS.
5. Strong understanding of conservation and preservation techniques for visual materials, including knowledge of appropriate storage, handling, and digitization methods.
6. Proficiency in using archival management systems and digital asset management tools to manage and provide access to visual collections.
7. Excellent research, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to critically evaluate and interpret visual materials in a variety of formats.
8. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks effectively, and meet deadlines.
9. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders and provide outstanding customer service.
